Upcycled Vintage crockery to tiered stands
I had left my corporate job in 2020 to help my daughter with her PSLE preparations. It was also circuit breaker and like everyone else – I was decluttering and entertaining myself with craftwork. I have always loved tiered stands and ventured to making my own with my vintage stash. My first sale was via Facebook marketplace in May and it was sold within 1 day of posting. That helped boost my confidence!
In August 2020, I got more active in producing and selling the tiered stands. In Nov 2020, I had my first pop-up store in PLQ and had positive response. Also met a few designers and they were very encouraging.
I enjoy the process of updating the look of these local vintage plates. The smiles and conversations from my customers or people who walk pass my pop-up stores are very satisfying. They reminisce about the meals about their family and childhood.
I source my plates from old provision shops, friends clearing their (or relatives) houses and thrift stores. These plates, bowls are often forgotten and dusty. No one takes a second look especially at those odd pieces. Some passersby even gift me their crockery as they would be throwing down the rubbish chutes.
I believe just 1 set of upcycle vintage tiered stand will be able to refresh the look of your existing table wares. This will also help reduce the need to buy new. Using existing crockery (Reuse, Repurpose) is the most sustainable lifestyle choice.
I encourage mix-and-match, and customer to choose the crockery design that speaks to them. That way, they can have one of a kind unique set of tiered plates which will be a talking piece. Most importantly, I hope the stands are put in used and nostalgic conversations of good times will be centered around meals with family and friends.
My designs are also dependent on the crockery that I sourced. Many beautiful plates are also made in Asia and they look equally great next to their European / American counterparts. I am proud of our heritage.
My appreciation for vintage stuff! And the lovely people that I meet along this journey. I feel it is my way of helping people connect with their loved ones and the nostalgia.
Collecting / Buying forlorn plates from old shops, houses that otherwise might be thrown away. Sharing stories, Customers turn friends, sharing ideas and collaborating with fellow crafters! Recently, I had a small surgical operation. A customer specially cooked her special meal and delivered to my house!
Kopitiam Sets is the most easily recognizable and attracts the most attention. However, many stop to admire the other vintage sets and pick out what speaks to them.
